National Data
Marine Geoscience Data Management System
The marine geoscience data management system provides access to data portals, such as the Ridge Multibeam Bathymetry Synthesis projects and the Seismic Reflection Field Data Center, as well as various tools and applications. Organizations involved in compiling these data include the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University, Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Austin, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.
NOAA’s National Benthic Inventory
The National Benthic Inventory is a dynamic quantitative database on benthic species distributions with a corresponding voucher collection of preserved benthic specimens (National Benthic Specimen Collection) maintained by the Coastal Ecology Program at the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science’s Center for Coastal Environmental Health and Biomolecular Research in Charleston, South Carolina.
Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS)
The Ocean Biogeographic Information System is a project of the Census of Marine Life. OBIS is a Web-based provider of global georeferenced information on marine species that can be explored through the OBIS portal. The OBIS portal accesses data content, information infrastructure, and informatics tools (maps, visualizations, and models) to provide a dynamic, global facility.
Regional
South Atlantic Fishery Management Council’s Habitat and Ecosystem Home Page
The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council is responsible for conservation and management of fish stocks off the coasts of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and east Florida to Key West. There is an available data viewer to interact with coral benthic habitats of the South Atlantic. Metadata records for geographic information system (GIS) data can be obtained from this site with distribution information provided.

The California Environmental Information Catalog provides a searchable interface to look for data throughout California.
Florida
Benthic Habitats of the Florida Keys
The National Ocean Service (NOS) and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission of Environmental Protection’s Florida Marine Research Institute worked collaboratively to map the types and extent of benthic habitats within the Florida Keys. These data were generated from aerial photographs taken between December 1991 and April 1992.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute Data Viewer
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission) developed an ArcIMS application to view and download GIS data for Florida. Data categories include bathymetry, boundaries, Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI), and ocean bottom habitat.
New York
Hudson River Benthic Mapper
The New York Department of Environmental Conservation developed the Hudson River Benthic Mapper to allow for interaction with Hudson River spatial data, to educate on the various techniques used to map benthic habitats, and illustrate how to use data and maps created by the Hudson River Benthic Mapper.
North Carolina
Benthic Macroinvertebrate Data by River Basin
The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources Division of Water Quality provide a recent analysis of benthic macroinvertebrates in various river basins. For some of the basins, a completed basin assessment report is listed. These reports provide raw benthic data.
Rhode Island
Coastal Eelgrass Habitats of Rhode Island
The Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC) and the University of Rhode Island’s Environmental Data Center (EDC) created a collection of coastal Rhode Island eelgrass (Zostera marina). The purpose of this project was to provide a single, comprehensive repository for Rhode Island eelgrass geographic data, and to provide resource managers and the public with an interactive way to access the data.
Texas
Texas General Land Office GIS Data
The Texas General Land Office offers downloadable GIS data from this site. Coastal resources GIS data is one of the categories of data available from this site, including data for submerged lands, coastal wetlands, seagrasses, sand and mud flats, reefs, shorelines, dunes, hazards areas, erosion areas, and historical areas and preserves.
Virginia
Chesapeake Bay Program Benthic Data Sets
Benthic data sets available from the Chesapeake Bay Program at Old Dominion University. Data are organized by the year collected.
Virginia Institute of Marine Science SAV
The Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences has provided annual coverage of Chesapeake Bay submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) data that were mapped from aerial photography, primarily at a scale of 1:24,000.
