LIDAR (LIght
Detection And Ranging) is a remote sensing technology that is
just beginning to come to the attention of all of its
potential users. With this CD-ROM, the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center is
furthering this process by providing an overview of how LIDAR
works and by illustrating two applications of the data for
coastal management.
In the "Tools and Applications" section, there
are examples of two uses of LIDAR at the state and local level
of coastal management. The Washington Department of Ecology
used LIDAR data to create a data layer for a wetlands
inventory map in the city of Westport. The Oregon Department
of Land Conservation and Development and the Center created an
application that uses LIDAR with a dune erosion model to
predict the effects of storm surge on dune-backed shorelines.
In the "About LIDAR" section, there are explanations of how
LIDAR is collected and how to acquire LIDAR data from the
Center, as well as some interesting visualizations of LIDAR
data.
