LIDAR Data Handler: A NOAA Coastal Services Center ArcView® Extension

In order to provide its customers with tools to manipulate LIDAR data, the NOAA Coastal Services Center developed an extension to ArcView® called the LIDAR Data Handler. This extension requires the user to have the ArcView® Spatial Analyst extension, because the tools in the handler were developed to work with the Arc/Info® Grid format. One can use data that are downloaded from LDART, or work with the Grid files that are included with the ArcView® Spatial Analyst projects on this CD-ROM. These files represent a small section of beach in Newport, Oregon. They are located in the data directory of this CD-ROM, as lidar97 and lidar98.

To download additional data:
Go to LDART

One can use the LIDAR Data Handler extension in the ArcView® project included on this CD-ROM, or copy it onto one's hard drive. The extension is located in the data directory of this CD-ROM as lidarhandler.avx.

Description

lidar dialog The LIDAR Data Handler has eight simple tools that are designed to manipulate grids. Although the data handler was designed with digital elevation models and LIDAR data in mind, many of the tools can be used with other kinds of grid data.

Legend Scaler interactively scales a legend (AVL file) to any desired range of data.

Legend Loader applies a legend (AVL file) to any number of selected grids at once.

ColorMap Editor allows the editing of the red, green and blue (RGB) values of any of the classes in the grid legend.

Grid Profiler allows the creation of profiles or transects across selected grid themes.

Grid Subtractor subtracts one grid from another.

Cut/Fill Calculator will calculate volume and area gained and lost from a difference grid (such as one calculated by Grid Subtractor).

Grid Clipper clips a grid by a selected polygon theme or graphic. This can be useful if for calculating differences for a small section of a grid.

Graphic To Shape converts a selected graphic (perhaps one that used to clip a grid) to a polygon theme.
