Service Description: This map service presents spatial information about the West Maui Coastal Uses Mapping Project in the Web Mercator projection. The service was developed as part of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center’s participatory mapping learning process, and contains data and information gathered from local stakeholders in West Maui. NOAA provides the information “as-is” and shall incur no responsibility or liability as to the completeness or accuracy of this information. NOAA assumes no responsibility arising from the use of this information. Metadata for the layers in this service can be found at . For additional information, please contact the NOAA Coastal Services Center (http://csc.noaa.gov/contact/contactForm.htm). The West Maui Coastal Use Mapping Project is a partnership between NOAA's Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center, NOAA's Pacific Islands Regional Office, NOAA’s Pacific Services Center, and the Hawaii Division of Aquatic Resources. The project was designed to enhance ocean management by gathering spatial data on human uses of the near-shore ocean environment in the Kahekili-Wahikuli region of Maui, Hawaii. The data were collected from regional ocean experts and users through participatory GIS methods. The West Maui Coastal Use Mapping Project fills a critical information gap in ocean management by providing a comprehensive, consistent and spatially explicit picture of human uses for management agencies, policy makers and stakeholders interested in sound and equitable ocean governance. Using participatory GIS concepts and applications, the mapping project generated spatial data and map products illustrating patterns, intensity, and qualitative information on both extractive and non-extractive/recreational coastal uses. This data set depicts patterns of ocean uses on a broad scale appropriate for a variety of ocean planning and management needs. Specifically, the data will be used by DAR and US Army Corps of Engineers for watershed and coastal resource management and protection. The Coastal Services Center will make every effort to provide continual access to this service but it may need to be taken down during routine IT maintenance or in case of an emergency. If you plan to ingest this service into your own application and would like to be informed about planned and unplanned service outages or changes to existing services, please register for our Map Services Notification Group (http://www.csc.noaa.gov/publications/subscriptions.html). We will do our best to provide you with information about any status changes to our map services.
